It is very difficult to have this opportunity for the teachers to gather together. This time, the group of teachers who have experienced teaching “Four Books” in colleges and universities in the past decade. Their landscapes are different. Some of them are taught by themselves. Some are more of them are researchers of Chinese philosophy and Confucian philosophy. Of course, there are also famous scholars who are studied by Eastern philosophy, such as Zhang Rulun. The participants of our meeting have a wide range of experiences and their respective cumulative experiences are quite rich, so it is very difficult to have such an opportunity. The last time we opened at Drunbi Hill was in 2005, and it has been more than 6 years since then. Why is Danbishan mentioned? Because we have a general outlook for the teaching of “Four Books” over the past ten years, which allows us to discuss the experience of “Four Books” tomorrow. This landscape is the “national learning popularity” in the past decade, and the second is the cooperation and attention of teachers to general education since the beginning of this century. Teacher Gan Yang has special experience in this regard. He has done a lot of tasks in this regard, including our Drunbi Hill Conference. This meeting was designed and promoted by Ganyang Teacher himself. Tsinghua University only helped to carry out this meeting from the side; the third is classic reading. Popularity in national studies, general education, and classical reading have become the three main civilization phenomena in society in the past decade. Under this scenario, the teaching activities of the “Four Books” with universities as an important base were promoted.
I think if I talked from a classical perspective, the Four Books should be the least controversial one. Tomorrow, whether from the perspective of general education or ordinary social civilization, “Four Books” is the first choice, and there is no doubt about this in classical terms. Even if we talk about Confucianism, the importance of the Four Books should be said to have been since the Song Dynasty.In quite a few aspects, I surpassed the Five. Because Zhu Zi also said that since the Four Books are treated, the Six Books can be understood without treatment. Zhu Zi also said that “the four sons are the staircase of the Six Books”, so to nourish the relationship is to emphasize the main position of the Four Books. Therefore, its position in classical is relatively important. So, when the Chinese civilization, which is marked by the popularity of national learning, was revived, what kind of color of the Four Books played in our teachings? This has become a very prominent problem. Because the rejuvenation of Chinese civilization is also its reconstruction, the most important thing about this reconstruction is how its focus value is affected. The basic value of the entire Chinese civilization should be emphasized if it is established and developed through the “Four Books”. Tomorrow, it will be affected in the new development of Chinese civilization, and of course it will first leave the teaching of the “Four Books”. Through its teaching process, it is realized slightly, generation by generation. So in this meaning, I think that teaching about the Four Books is not only a teaching problem, but a major problem of touching and rebuilding civilization and rejuvenation of civilization, which has the main meaning. This is the first meaning I talk about.
The second point is important about the course of “Four Books”. There are still many types of “Four Books” courses now, and there are only two types, namely the “Four Books” course with “professional teaching” and the “Four Books” course with “non-professional teaching”. If we talked about it from the times, from the past to the present, the four-book course has not only started in the past decade. “Four Books” is a professional course in the Department of Human Sciences in advanced colleges, especially for masters and doctoral students. It started in the 1980s. In the 1990s, many Chinese philosophy professions have started such courses. But obviously the focus we will discuss tomorrow is not this kind of course, nor is it a professional course established in the Chinese department, philosophy department or even history department. We are currently facing the problem of long and short professional teaching and close to the generalization class. The names of the general courses in various schools are different. Many schools have not called this name yet, but appear under the name “choose and study”. Their properties are relatively close. In the context of what I said, the popular Chinese learning, general teaching and short-term maintenance classic reading have been paid attention to by teachers, the course of using the Four Books as an important textbook for Chinese civilization classics is of great importance to the classics of Chinese civilization.The important thing is to develop in the non-professional teaching of major learning. Of course, it also includes social and humanities teaching outside the teaching system. Just like we have seen many schools, book schools, and various self-developed social teaching organizations. The focus of our discussion is not the level of professional teaching, and for fear that it is not the level of social civilization teaching. It can be more of the level of the general teaching course undertaken by universities. But this is not to say that we only care about this level, and we can also have professional teaching that can be accessed to undergraduate or master’s degree, as well as some social teaching and classical learning. I’m just saying that our subject discussion is still in this regard. However, under the conditions of this subject, it must also actively promote the cooperation of transportation with several other levels of “Four Books”. But the point is still to teach the general education, which is my second consideration.
Then I have always talked about the past and present, and there is a future dimension. The third point is that in addition to experiencing transportation, we also need some forward-looking discussions. In this regard, I trust that Taiwanese students have already had a lot of experience in teaching the basic textbooks of Chinese civilization, and we also hope to hear some such experiences.
If you look at it more comprehensively, I think this so-called “foresight” should be more forward-looking. Because the collection of “Four Books” was in the Song Dynasty, it was said that this was a new collection after modern structure in terms of Confucian classical system. The new assembly is obviously a regular customer. To meet the new challenges of the times, the prominence of “Big School” and “Doctor of the Mean” began in the Tang Dynasty. “Big School” is important to use a continuous framework like “the inner sage and the outer king”To resist and criticize the progress of the sect, the Doctrine of the Mean is to add some of the Confucian dimensions that were less discussed in the past, such as the mind and the way of heaven.
