The Great Explanation of Xunzi’s “Concurrent” Discussion

[Abstract] After sorting out, studying and analyzing, Xunzi’s “Concurrent” Discussion covers the three major thinking dimensions of gift, law and art. Introduction

When I talk about the “combination” discussion on the thinking layer, the master would think of Mo Zi’s “combination love” statement. “Enjoy” says that the background of Mozi’s full-frame study is the basis of his ideological foundation that was established in the pre-Qin period, and it is the theoretical characteristic of his appeal among the hundreds of schools of thought. Therefore, when later generations discussed “part-in-one love” and related arts, lyrics and views, they often advanced and focused on Mozi’s “contemplative patent”. Actually, no.

The pre-Qin Xuanzi thoughts and creations all have their own professional language. Xiong Gongzhe once said, “In the study of Zuzi, each has its own artistic phrases: such as Mozi’s ‘combination’, Su Zhang’s ‘restraint’, Zhuzi’s ‘restraint’, Han Fei’, and Chu Zi’s ‘spiritual practice’, are all artistic phrases.” [1]16 Zuzi’s professional academic phrases such as Confucius’ benevolence and Meng’s “What should I do next?” Zi’s tyranny, Xunzi’s sect, Lao Tzu’s way, Shang Jun’s law, Shen Zi’s ritual, Shen Zi’s traits, etc. are all. It can be said that all the masters and one family learn to speak have their own language.

If “全” is regarded as one of the many characters, everyone who writes it can use it. If “combination” is considered as one of the ways of thinking, everyone can accept it. If you consider “combination” as one of the philosophical concepts and start answering questions with fifty participants, everything is described according to her dream situation, not only Mo Zi has it. As Huang Lu of the Ming Dynasty said in “The Book of Li’s Burning”: “Academics are the public instruments of the whole country.” [2] No one can “break down” thinking. Although Mozi was the founder of “combination” discussion, he was far from the end of this thinking, and even he failed to develop the “combination” discussion to a theoretical height of peak and unreplaceable. It can be said that the “combination” of the concept of thinking has not been implicated in the history of thinking since Mozi, but has been inseparable and continuous.

The word “页” first appeared in bronze inscriptions of age. In the pre-Qin classics before “Mozi”, the “concurrent” foundation has not been paid attention to, let alone appropriate discussion and theoretical exploration. Xu Shen’s “Shi Wen Jiezi” says, “It is also a combination. It is always a combination. It is also a combination. It holds two grains, and it holds one grain.”[3]143 It is a word that is wise, and it is originally meant to hold two grains in hand, while “明” is like holding a grain of rice in hand. From the original meaning of “Zhen Erhe”, it is then extended to many meanings. In the “Dictionary of Common Characters of Ancient and Han Dynasty” written by Wang Li and others, “combination” has four meanings, namely “doing several things at the same time or having several things”, “aggregation, annexation”, “whatever, exhaustion”, and “the words, expressing parallel, and.” [4]187

The development of the philosophical meaning of “combination” should be left to the future generations’ talented new ideas and the extraordinary. If we study and analyze Xunzi’s “combination”, we can see that it contains multiple thinking dimensions, and it forms a main concept of Xunzi’s philosophy, and even can form a “combination” system, which is a major concept of “combination”. Xunzi’s “combination” discussion of great meaning can be described as a rule of law that can be used to overthrow benevolence and kindness, both power, difference and profit, and both mental governance of people’s favor.

1. The charity of both overthrow and benevolent

 

Xun Xue is the study of gifts, including the three dimensions of upholding the ritual, emphasizing the law and advocating the arts.
